Someone at the corporate office decides to change something with the network, and I come in on a Saturday to work after having a shit night of sleep because my daughter just had surgery and was up on and off all night, and none of my PCs will connect to the internet, but others in the building will.

Thankfully I know a teeny bit about computers and was able to change the network connections (two of the PCs just needed to be restarted/unplugged from the internet to reset themselves) and get them working, because without internet at work, I might as well go home.

Fortunately I do a lot with computers, so when people do something to the network I either fix it really fast or do something to bump them off so that if I don't have internets, neither do they. Usually this involves screwing with the ancient and slight worshiped RADIUS server.

They NEVER tell us when they're making changes. Hell, they'll take the system offline in the middle of the day and never say boo. Then you call and ask them why everything's down, and they act all pissy, like you're bothering them because "we know its down, we're doing an update, it'll be back up in a minute".

The funny thing is, the PCs that were left on all night (and weren't supposed to) were fine, it was just mine because I turn mine off at night.

Ah yeah, so the computers that was still up had it's IP lease and such, but yours was now trying to pull from somewhere invalid. Is this a fairly small IT department? It's strange they would be changing IPs to infrastructure critical systems.

Yes, and yes. We are a car dealer group with about 16 stores.

This is something you need to bring up with someone that has a higher pay grade than you. ANY TIME a change is being made that can affect production, whether on or off hours, needs to be communicated properly to the people who need / want to know. Failure to do so is against ITIL standards. Correct contact needs to be maintained in order to adhere to CAB as well (if your company uses a CAB). If your IT department is not following basic procedures, something needs to be done to rectify that situation or hire someone (me) who will bring the department up to snuff.
